Termimal Nicol Re-Imagined

Over the past year we’ve had an opportunity to hear from many community members during the Terminal Nicol Re-imagined process.  Thank you to everyone who has participated so far – your input has provided valuable insights and ideas to the Project Committee for the development of the DRAFT Terminal Nicol Re-imagined Plan. We’re excited to now share this draft plan with you and receive your feedback!Join us at our final TN Re-Imagined Public Event to review the Draft Plan and share your comments.

At the event there will be hourly guided bus tours of the Terminal Nicol corridor to look at key locations where future improvements could occur. We’ll look at what’s there today – and imagine what could be there tomorrow.
Bus tours depart from Dish at approximately 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm, and 2:30 pm.

Attending the Halloween Howl at Diana Krall Plaza? We’ll be less than a 10 minute walk away – right along the Study corridor! What a great way to show off your Halloween costume and check out the area!

1. FINANCIAL:General Account – $2,603.75
   Picnic Account – 1,123.29
2. FOOD FOREST – ART IN THE PARK AUG 13: The Food Forest is being used as intended, though neighbours have noted some noise concerns. The official name of the Forest was determined after input from the Community at the Miner`s Picnic to be The Livingston Food Forest. Signage will be displayed in English and Hulqminum.
   An Art Day will be held at the site on Aug. 13 from 12-­4pm to create paintings to decorate the area. The event is hosted by MYCDC, NAC, and members of the art community. The SECA Teawagon will be present and stocked with hot dogs, buns, etc. Popcorn machine will be present also. Volunteers are requested for food prep and service. Please contact Larissa at MYCDC if you can help. Signage for the Livingston Food Forest will be displayed in English and Hulqminum.
3. BOCCE IN THE PARK: A successful Bocce game was held at the park on Sunday, July 31. Pancakes were served, and approx. 12 individuals participated.
4. TEAWAGON: Completion of decoration on the Teawagon needs to be done.
5. BLOG: We need a volunteer to post General Meeting Minutes and community information as needed to our Blog. One member has indicated they may possibly be able to do it, but encourages another to step up as their schedule may not allow consistent attention to the task. If you can help with this, please contact a Board Member.
6. WOMEN’S GROUP EVENT: On Saturday Aug. 6, at Maffeo Sutton Park, Women for Peace and Freedom are holding a Memorial on the Anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by Atomic bomb. “Never Again” Atom Bomb. The Memorial will conclude at 8pm. with the release of Lanterns in memory of thevictims.

24th Annual Miner’s Heritage Picnic Saturday, June 18th

This Saturday, come one come all and enjoy in the annual & free community family day event of pancakes, petting zoo, painting and other party fun! Sales/fundraising items such as SECA garb, hot dogs, popcorn and silent auction items all contribute towards the SECA association for continued community gathering and connection. We look forward to seeing you there!

South End Community Association

When you come to the South End Community Association’s Annual Miner’s Heritage Picnic, it’s so jam-packed with activities it’s hard to decide what to do first.

This is the 24th anniversary of the free family event, to be held at Deverill Park, located on Irwin St. between Milton and Farquhar Sat., June 18th, from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 am, followed by a First Nations prayer and speakers at 11 am, and a Heritage Walk around the historic South End neighbourhood at 11:10 am.

The ever-popular pet parade, now named the Signy Pet Parade in memory of South End resident Signy Gauer, will be held at 1 pm just before the Laura Ramsay Memorial Tea at 2 pm.

And while these are going on, there’s live music and entertainment, art, painting and crafts, pony rides and a petting farm, a climbing wall, miniature train ride, bouncy castle, face-painting and more!

SECA Mad Hatter’s Float in Nanaimo’s First PRIDE Parade Sunday June 12th!

SECA is very excited to be in on all the parade fun, especially for Nanaimo’s First PRIDE PARADE!  This coming Sunday, June 12, we’ll be in our Mad Hatter-y (and Drag!) garb with our beloved Teawagon and assorted characters.  If you’d like to join us, please do!  Come as any wacky Alice-in-Wonderland character, wear your SECA T-Shirt OR put your best DRAG face forward and walk/dance/swagger/strut the route with us!  We meet on Commercial Rd between the highway and Wharf/Skinner St by 11:30; the parade starts at 12:00 and will finale in Maffeo Sutton with a festival. If you have not yet seen or crossed the rainbow crosswalks at Commercial and Skinner – here’s your chance to do it with pizazz! The parade route ends there (Terminal and Comox) so if you’re not staying you might want to arrange a lift back.

The Meeting was called to order with the acknowledgement that we meet on traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

1. FINANCIAL:General Account – $1,630.51 reduced due to tea wagon repairs.
   Picnic Account – $2,028.27
   
2. MINER’S HERITAGE PICNIC: Final arrangements are coming together.  However, Volunteers are still needed.  A sign up for volunteers was circulated at the meeting. Particularly needed are:  Hot dog cooks/sales, Set-up starting at 7a.m. and Clean-up at the end of the day.  Posters are available and Members are requested to take a supply and put them up.
3. PING PONG TABLE:  A quote has been obtained for installing a permanent Ping Pong Table at Deverill Park.  Thanks to Thomas for his work to make this happen. Nets will be purchased separately and donated (THANK YOU!) and the Exec will look into purchasing a few extra ping pong paddles and balls to hang up for use if people do not have their own.
4. NEIGHBOURHOOD SAFETY: There have been recent criminal activities in the 700 block of Haliburton, particularly in the alleyway between Woodhouse and Robins St.  Local residents are working to initiate a neighbourhood effort to make crime in this area less attractive by following CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) best practices. 5. BOARD RETREAT: The Members were advised of the retreat held for our SECA Board Members on Sunday, May  29th.  The all-day workshop centered around the Myers-Briggs personality type descriptions to help our Board Members work most effectively for our community and was facilitated by P. Beltgens. The use of Pacific Gardening kitchen/dining area, day-long facilitation, and food (potluck) were all donated (Thank you)! An Honorarium gift certificate was presented to her in thanks for this wonderful day.
6. ANTI-IDLING UPDATE: Action by Committees at City Hall on any items has been prorogued for the present.   The City’s Goal Alignment Report released today, contains no initiatives focused on Environmental concerns.
7. PRIDE PARADE (SECA FLOAT): The Parade is Sunday, June 12 and Members are encouraged to march with us.  As we get final information, the Membership Secretary will notify Members by e-mail of time and place.  If you would like costume assistance, contact S. Robertson.  If further painting on the tea wagon is needed, local Artists have indicated their willingness to bring the tea wagon paint job to completion (over the summer).
8. NAC DONATION: The Nanaimo Arts Council be holding an on-line Silent Auction Fundraiser.  Their offices were destroyed in the Downtown fire and they have been relocated to Wallace Street.  The Member asks if SECA is willing to donate a T-shirt or Apron.  Moved by S. Larocque, Second by D. Hardie to donate a SECA apron.  Carried unanimously.
9. DUCKS: A local resident was asked to hatch ducklings for a farmer and they were not picked up.  
   Khaki Campbells, Crested Buffs,  Indian Runners, Crested Whites and Crested Rowans are available at a Cost of $10 each.   Contact:  Len Greaves at 250-758-8903 if you wish to purchase.  Nanaimo by-laws allow 6 ducks on a residential property under 1 acre.

It’s Parade season!

And the South End Community Association will be in on all the fun.  This coming Sunday, May 22nd, we’ll be in the Heritage Days Parade, with our Mad Hatter-y Teawagon and assorted characters.  If you’d like to join us,please do!  Come as any wacky Alice-in-Wonderland character OR simply wear your SECA T-Shirt and walk the route with us.  We meet at Victoria Road and Finlayson by 12:30; the parade starts at 1:00 and should be finished by 2:00.  The parade route ends at Terminal and Comox, so you might want to arrange a lift back, or parade your own way home on the sidewalks.
